The Hydrostatic Head (HH) rating, measured in millimetres (mm), represents the height of a water column a fabric can withstand before leaking. A rating of 300mm means light drizzle protection; 1,000-2,000mm handles steady rain; and 3,000mm+ is the industry benchmark for serious outdoor shelters.
Coating Systems: PA, PU and Silicone Explained
The coating determines how a fabric achieves its rating. PA (Polyacrylic) coatings are cost-effective and lightweight, suitable for entry-level models. PU (Polyurethane) coatings add hydrolysis resistance, ideal for long-term UV exposure. Silicone coatings deliver the highest tear strength and UV stability but require seam sealing — the reason premium tents combine silicone-coated flysheets with PU-coated inner tents.
